By. 11:56 am, March 12, 2014.We owe at least one dark corner of iTunes to sneaky parents.Back in 2011, Apple listened to what sounded like a who didn’t want their kids to know what mommy and daddy were doing on the family iPad by allowing users to “hide” purchases. If you spend any time lurking around the more shadowy parts of the store, you’ll note how many of the reviews of these apps are comments from desperate users who want the traces of their momentary lapse in judgement wiped clean. The ability to hide purchases and downloads changes that, to a point. Reviews from an adult “Truth or Dare” game.Like a lot of things in iTunes, the destination may be straightforward but the road is tortuous, making it easy in effect for multiple users (parents, kids, co-workers) to hide what they buy (or download) on iTunes. The key word here: hide.

Apple will not delete a record of anything you download or buy on your devices, unless in the first 90 days you ask for a “refund” or “report a problem.” (More on this below). Note that Apple considers free downloads “purchases,” so those go on your permanent record “purchase history,” too. This means that you can delete the dubious Kama Sutra app that your co-worker downloaded on the company iPad while at SXSW, but a record of its passing across your device will live on, forever, in the purchase history, even if it was free. That said, there are two ways to squirrel your not-for-public-viewing materials under the virtual mattress. The first is the one authorized by Apple, the second one we stumbled across researching this story.Method One: Create a “hidden list” of purchases or downloadsOnce signed into your iTunes account, click on the “purchased” link under the Quick Links section on the right.Remember, this “purchased” also list includes any free media downloaded across any devices linked to this account — music, movies, TV shows, apps and books.Using apps as an example, inside the purchase list, all the icons will appear with a “x” in the left-hand corner when you mouse over them. Clicking on the “x” hides them across all your devices.
(Note: not deleted. I mean it: they will not be deleted from your device or your purchase history.
Just hidden from view.)These records live on in the cloud. To see what may be hidden — or unhide them — head back to your “Account” section. Scroll down to iTunes in the Cloud and select “manage” under Hidden Purchases. From here, you can “unhide” them for easy access.Method two: SmokescreenYou may have noticed a problem: while it’s easy to hide questionable music and such, what about in-app purchases?

Apple doesn’t provide iOS users with method on how to completely delete purchased apps from their purchased list. Purchased apps do not limit your iCloud storage space when you backup file. They are not part of iCloud or iTunes backup because they reside on the store's servers and are accessible for download from the servers.
Therefore, you can only hide the app purchase history. However, you can delete some of the app data which are stored in iCloud. This helps in freeing up space and speeding your iOS device. Tap the settings app to launch it and then scroll to iCloud. Tap iCloud in order to open it.Step 2. Tap the Storage & Backup then go to Manage Storage.Step 3. Look for 'Documents and Data' and choose the specific app that you would like to delete its data.Step 4.
Tap the 'Delete' Button located on the left of the app that you would like to delete. A prompt will appear which you must tap to confirm deletion.Step 5.
To delete everything, just tap on the 'Delete All' and confirm deletion. On your iOS device, go to the Appstore Updates Purchased.
You will be able to view a list with details of purchased apps. In this example lets hide Squarespace Note app.Step 2. On your Windows or Mac device, launch iTunes then enter iTunes Store. Click on “Purchased” located on the right side of the window in order to access the purchase history.Step 3. Click on “Apps” located at the top of your current window.
The detailed list of all your purchased as well as downloaded apps will be displayed. Hover the mouse pointer over the specific app that you would like to hide. If you are keen, you will notice that an “X” mark appears just at the top left corner of the particular apps icon.Step 4. Click the 'X' in order to hide the app. The purchased apps list will update and you be able to see that the hidden app is not in that list anymore.
If you have a device operating on up to iOS 6, go to App Store Updates Purchased. You will notice that the hidden app doesn't exist. For individuals with ios 7 you will realize that the hidden app still exists on the purchase history. Therefore, go to Settings iTunes & App Store.
Tap on your Apple ID then sign out of it. Go back to App Store and you will find out that the purchase history is empty. Just tap on the Sign in button then log in again using your Apple ID. After this process, all the hidden apps will never show up anymore.

PahuI think you proved my point. If I have to hack to do the things a common user needs to do day to day, then isn't something wrong?Apple has made hay on the fact that the Mac is simple and just works. As a recent Winders convert, I generally agree. However, this one defies logic. I wonder if you're looking at this the wrong way?I understand your reference to the removal of files from iTunes but I think that the App Store app is more like a browser rather than a standalone application like iTunes. With iTunes the apps and music you purchase are kept within the iTunes folders and for the most part the iTunes application is used to interact with those downloaded files.
But I would say that the majority of applications you buy on the App Store via the app are installed into the Applications folder and exist independently. They are opened without using App Store and they can be deleted from the Applications folder easily, again without having to use the App Store app.The other thing to note is that the App Store is showing purchases - not installed content. You can delete an application from the Mac but the fact is that you still bought this application and that it what the App Store is showing. So to me I think the App Store function is fine.
But if you want to suggest a change to the App Store then you should use the of the Apple site, as this is really just a user forum. Then what do you think of this situation. I got iMedia Browser, didn't want it, threw it out in Finder. Mac App Store under Updates shows one update available for the program, and it offers a update button. The little badge in the Dock shows the one update.

It's like a little nag that I'm not up to date with my apps. I threw it away and it still haunts me. I want to delete it from the purchased list, so I don't get notifications any longer. Is there some buried cache or receipts folder for the Mac App Store I can toss this Ex-Application.

Over the past few years, I have downloaded various apps onto my iPhone from the App Store. I have noticed that the App Store remembers the apps that I have downloaded.

So, for instance: If I download an app and then delete it from my phone and go back into the App Store, the download icon is different (it doesn't say '+Get' like apps that I have never downloaded before, instead it will have an icon of a cloud with an arrow pointing downwards). How to I get the App Store/iCloud to forget these programs?
